Most Anticipated TV Part 2

19/01/2013

We here at Sticky Trigger are pumped for 2013. Screw resolutions and the betterment of ourselves, we’re excited for the upcoming entertainment and 2013 promises lots of goodies in TV, movies, games and music. We’ve compiled a list of everything we’re looking forward to this year so you can get as eager about it as we are.

[SID = Still In Development; TBD = To Be Determined]

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary

ABC1 (Exp. APR – AUS; Exp. APR BBC America – US)

Last year was Bond's turn, but 2013 is all Doctor Who, the BBC sci-fi about the adventures of a time travelling face-changing alien, celebrating its 50th anniversary. The rumour mill has been churning over what the Doctor and his companions will get up to for their golden jubilee, but little is actually known. Head writer Steven Moffat is keeping mum, other than to say this year will be "immense" and "full of tremendous surprises". The second half of series 7 will premiere in April, with the actual anniversary special due to hit screens late in the year.

And it's not just the TV show that's gearing up for a celebration: Big Finish, who have produced high-quality Doctor Who audio dramas for more than ten years, have announced an epic story featuring all five of the surviving Doctors (Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann). Furthermore, BBC4 has commissioned An Adventure in Space and Time, a drama about the origins of Doctor Who to be penned by Mark Gatiss.

The Following: Season 1
No Network Specified (TBD – AUS; Fox JAN 21 – US)

Former FBI agent Ryan Hardy must return after the serial killer he put behind bars starts a copycat killer cult over the internet.

I have a probably-unhealthy interest in cults and serial killers and what makes them tick. And with Kevin Bacon as the FBI agent, I’ll definitely be tuning in for the pilot.

Fringe: Season 5 (Final)

Go! (TBD – AUS; Fox FRI 9/8c – US)

*SPOILERS FOR PREVIOUS SEASONS OF FRINGE*

The fifth season will follow up on season four's 'Letters of Transit' and see the Fringe team transported forward to the 2030s, where the mysterious Observers have arrived in force, conquered the Earth and subjugated humanity.

It was surprisingly generous of the Fox Network to give Fringe a final thirteen-episode season, and the writers are determined to make the most of it and give the extended Bishop clan an explosive conclusion. Walter, Olivia and Peter, and their grown daughter Ella are the last hope for humankind, but there are still oodles of secrets, surprises and weirdness to be uncovered.

Game of Thrones: Season 3

Showcase (APR 1 – AUS; HBO Mar 31 – US)

Adapted from George R. R. Martin’s fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, it follows characters locked in a civil war for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms.

In the words of the great Darren Criss, “this year anyone's gonna die, and it's gonna be totally awesome”… and one can only hope it’s Joffrey. Who doesn’t want to tune in for more sex and gore and fantastic character development? Game of Thrones has everything: gorgeous locations, beautiful actors and epic storylines; it doesn’t make sense not to watch. Plus this show has some of the most kickass female characters on TV, all in the one place.

Hannibal: Season 1
No Network Specified (TBD – AUS; NBC Feb 12 – US)

Hannibal follows the career of FBI Agent Will Graham as he hunts down serial killers with the help of forensic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter -- unaware that his new partner is a more dangerous monster than anyone he's ever chased.

No adaptation of the Thomas Harris novels has quite reached the heights of Manhunter or The Silence of the Lambs, but Hannibal is the first attempt to do so on television, and it's in the capable hands of Bryan Fuller (Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies). Fuller's unique deal with the network gives him firm creative control over how the series unfolds for years to come, and Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) is an excellent choice for everyone's favourite psychiatric cannibal. There's a surprising amount of pedigree working in the show's favour -- the supporting cast will include Gillian Anderson (X-Files), Lawrence Fishburne (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), Gina Torres (Suits) and Caroline Dhavernas (Wonderfalls). However, the strangest announcement has been that thanks to Fuller bringing over a recurring character from Wonderfalls, Hannibal will effectively exist in the same universe as Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies. Wrap your head around that.

House of Cards: Season 1
No Network Specified (TBD – AUS; Netflix Feb 1 – US)

An adaptation of the BBC miniseries of the same name, the new political thriller will feature Kevin Spacey as Rep. Frank Underwood, a coldblooded politician out to topple the new president.

Starring Kevin Spacey (The Men Who Stare at Goats), Robin Wright (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and Kate Mara (American Horror Story), and with David Fincher (The Social Network) developing the series, need I really say more about why this is something to look out for?

The Legend of Korra: Season 2
SID (Ordered by Nickelodeon; rumoured to return mid-year)

The Legend of Korra is a spin-off of the crazy popular Avatar: The Last Airbender. We follow the new Avatar, hot-headed Korra, in her journey to Republic City to train in airbending and take on the “Equalists”, a revolutionary group. After a massive year in 2012, The Legend of Korra will return for a 2nd Season.

The Legend of Korra isn’t just one of those, this is pretty good for a kids show, I honestly believe it’s some of the best television I have ever seen. Everything from the characters to the story and animation has me amped. The only fault I have with the series is that I am not watching new episodes now!

- Jin Chan Yum Wai

Ray Donovan: Season 1
No Network Specified (TBD – AUS; Showtime JUN 30 – US)

Ray manages the crises of the famous but when his own father is suddenly released from prison, Ray struggles to fix his own problems.

Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight are the main reasons this peaked my interest, but they’ve also got Allen Coulter who directed episodes of award winning dramas The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. I’ve got my fingers crossed that this is good enough to replace some of the fantastic dramas leaving our screens this year.

SHIELD: Season 1
SID (Ordered by ABC)

SHIELD will follow the Marvel Universe's super-spy organisation that featured heavily in last year's "The Avengers".

The oft-rumoured SHIELD television series is currently in development, with a pilot written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tanchareon, and directed by Joss. Making fans across the globe happy is the news that Clark Gregg (the beloved Agent Phil Coulson) will headline the show, along with Ming-Na (Stargate Universe) and a slew of new talent. Joss, Jed and Mo will be showrunners if SHIELD is picked up by ABC, but let's face it: who wouldn't pick up SHIELD?

Spartacus: War of the Damned
Go! (TBD – AUS; Starz Jan 25 – US)

Spartacus: War of the Damned will pick up after a big time-skip, as the armies of Spartacus march across the Roman Empire and prompt some of the Roman heavyweights to try and bring down the rebellion once and for all. Crassus, the historical nemesis of Spartacus, will finally make his big debut, with a young Julius Caesar at his side and bringing a brand new nest of interesting Roman politics to the show.

Spartacus has been a juggernaut of sex, violence and intense historical drama, despite the tragedies that befell the production.  Creator Steven DeKnight is promising that the final season of the show will take it to the next level and deliver a satisfying conclusion. The first three seasons have been amazing, and if 'more but bigger' is the mantra of War of the Damned, this show is going out with a bang.
