Most Anticipated TV Part 1

19/01/2013

We here at Sticky Trigger are pumped for 2013. Screw resolutions and the betterment of ourselves, we’re excited for the upcoming entertainment and 2013 promises lots of goodies in TV, movies, games and music. We’ve compiled a list of everything we’re looking forward to this year so you can get as eager about it as we are.

[SID = Still In Development; TBD = To Be Determined]

American Gods: Season 1

SID (Ordered by HBO)

Based on Neil Gaiman’s award winning novel, the series is set to follow ex-convict Shadow who accepts employment with the mysterious Mr. Wednesday. Shadow undertakes an epic journey across America as he gets more entangled in Mr. Wednesday’s world and discovers his job involves more than he expected.

This is one of my favourite novels and one that I can imagine working perfectly as a TV-series similar to HBO’s current series, Game of Thrones. Gaiman has worked on TV writing before and in his capable hands as executive producer and writer, not to mention an estimated budget of $30 million to $40 million per season, it’s likely to be phenomenal. And they’re already planning for at least six seasons!

Arrested Development: Season 4

No Network Specified (TBD – AUS; Netflix May - US)

Arrested Development centres on the wealthy and irresponsible members of the Bluth family and Michael, the dependable son, who tries to sort out the dodgy family affairs. Season four of Arrested Development will begin where it left off with the Bluth family back in the saddle and ready to make the world laugh again.

It has been six years, with multiple teases, crossovers and references, until Netflix raised their hands and said, "It’s happening". And the world rejoiced and people didn't know what to do with themselves, unsure whether to wear their Slut T-shirts or their cut-offs. Reunions and jokes aside, Arrested Development is one of the greatest and well-crafted comedies in TV history and even though it was cancelled after three seasons, everyone knew there was more to be told about the Bluth story. I’m psyched to see the show explode once again with comedy, wit and insight into the world of American culture, politics and relative ties. Oh and when the fourteen-episode season is over there’s supposedly a movie to look forward to.

Arrow: Season 1

Nine (TBD – AUS; The CW WED 8.7c – US)

Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) steps into the role of the titular hero after returning from five hellish years on an uncharted island.

Another superhero series from the network that kept Smallville going for ten years? It sounds like a recipe for disaster, but every review and report promises that this Green Arrow series is a whole different breed. The writers take a smart, serialized approach to developing Ollie from a murderous vigilante determined to bring Starling City's corrupt power brokers to justice into a full-blown superhero, and he's surrounded by a solid supporting cast, including Katie Cassidy (Supernatural) and the great John Barrowman (Torchwood) as a shadowy force for evil.

Bates Motel: Season 1

No Network Specified (TBD – AUS; A&E MAR 18 – US)

Whether it be the classic original Hitchcock film, any of its terrible sequels, the earlier novel it was based on, or the Vince Vaughn-led 1998 remake, I’m sure you know the story – Norman Bates is a psycho.

Bates’ sick story is often considered one of the best horror tales of all time, and in 2013 we get an entirely new vision of the madman; we get to see just what drove him to become the monster, as told through his childhood and teen years. With up and comer Freddie Highmore taking the role of Norman, and the always stunning Vera Farmiga as his mother, Norma, Bates Motel will delve into the rising popularity of the horror genre and hopefully deliver an experience that lives up to the name.

Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome

No Network Specified (TBD – AUS; SyFy Feb – US)

The spinoff takes place between the events of Caprica and Battlestar Galactica, when young hotshot William Adama joins the Colonial Navy at the height of the first Cylon War and finds himself serving on the Battlestar Galactica.

Syfy's backdoor pilot for a new Battlestar Galactica series was released as webisodes at the end of 2012, but a full-length DVD and Blu-ray have been scheduled for an early 2013 release and fans of the franchise are getting excited. The special effects in the webisodes were top-notch and the casting was solid, with British actor Luke Pasqualino (Skins) stepping into the role of young Adama and giving him a Top-Gun-Maverick swagger. Pick up the home media release and get the network suits on board with giving us more toaster-killing action.

Breaking Bad: Season 5 P2 (Final)

Showcase (TBD AUS and US; rumoured to return mid-year)

This season will seal the fates of Walter White, chemistry teacher turned meth cook, and Jesse Pinkman, teenage delinquent turned moral compass.

Breaking Bad has already earned itself a place on my personal list of best TV dramas of all time and I can’t imagine that the last 8 episodes will do anything to change that. I have watched this series on the edge of my seat from the very beginning and I am chomping at the bit to know where these characters will finally end up.

Community: Season 4

Go! (TBD – AUS; NBC Feb 7 - US)

Community follows the evolution of a study group, individually and collectively, and their experiences at Greendale Community College.

After multiple delays, losing cast and crew (Neil Goldman, Garrett Donovan, Megan Ganz, Chris McKenna, and Chevy Chase), and the firing of showrunner and creator Dan Harmon, I still have faith in Community. It's a show that is leaps and bounds above most comedy shows and with stunt casting like Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Gallactica), Matt Lucas (Little Britian) and Malcolm McDowell (Entourage), this is looking to be a killer season. Especially since Academy Award winner Jim Rash (The Decendents), also known as Dean Pelton, has written an episode about Greendale’s alumni and promos of the first episode suggest a parody of The Hunger Games. If you haven't started watching the series, you have just under a month to get acquainted with the show, and trust me it’s well worth it.

Count Arthur Strong: Season 1

SID (Ordered by BBC Two UK; rumoured to start April 2013)

Count Arthur Strong was originally a character created and performed by Steve Delaney, who gained fame in his character’s radio show. Count Arthur is a geriatric variety star suffering from the problems of old age such as memory loss, bad hearing, etc.

Delaney has been working on adapting the character for a TV sitcom with Graham Linehan (creator of The IT Crowd, Black Books, Father Ted). I’ve never heard the radio show, although it is in its seventh season so it must be doing something right, but it’s the pedigree of Linehan that has me impatient to see this new series. Linehan’s other works have all made my top favourite comedies list and I hope this one will be equally brilliant.
