The Episode

Lestrade procrastinates leaving, even though he is no longer needed. Holmes and Watson investigate a man who is suspected of murdering his wife years ago after a ransom demand is requested for her safe return.

The Good

I quite enjoyed this episode, actually, which is a shock.

The case was genuinely good, it had some nice surprises and as a result, the episode had a good rhythm. I thought that they might take the predicable route and have the husband become the murderer… well, his wife’s murderer. What a great twist. That stupid man took the accusations of murdering his wife when he was innocent and then the first thing he does is murders someone else! Incredible.

The wife was a devious sort, wasn’t she? Faking her own demise and then fabricating an entirely new life. A life that led to her growing ears on her own back. Devious, or disturbed? I’m going to go with both.

Lestrade, on the other hand, continued to bug me. He was sort of redeemed by the end of the episode, but only barely. Joan, being the fabulously caring woman she is, decided to help him out, but I probably would’ve punched him. I was mildly irritated by Sherlock’s apathy toward Lestrade (cause aren’t they friends??) but after sitting upon my irritation for a whole 2 seconds, I realised that his reaction toward Lestrade was true to his character.

Which brings me to Lestrade’s mugging case. I could definitely see Sherlock fabricating the entire thing, for the following reason:

  1. To get Lestrade the hell out of his house

I’m just kidding. (Sort of). If Sherlock did have a hand in Lestrade’s case, then I’m sure that was a primary reason, but I also like to think that Sherlock actually does care about other people, so helping Lestrade see that he’s worth something is certainly not past Sherlock’s capabilities. Either way, Lestrade’s gone and everyone’s happy!

Until next week!

Speculation

Got nothing for you guys! Standalone ep, once again. We need a good serial killer! I think revealing Moriarty in season one was something of a mistake, and then by humanising her further by making her a mother, she’s kind of lost some of her evilness. But, hey! What can you do?

Highlight

The husband killing that guy! I can’t get over the absurdity of his actions! I am laughing right now thinking about it! Not only did he make a murderer out of himself, it was for no reason! Cause his wife was alive the whole damn time! Spectacular.
