Chatting with... Elizabeth Rose

31/3/2014

The past year has definitely been a whirlwind for Sydney producer Elizabeth Rose. Her smash ‘The Good Life’ was well received all across Australia, she’d been a part of a huge collaboration with Flight Facilities, and now she has embarked on a nationwide tour with support of SAFIA and Fishing. We got a chance to catch up with Elizabeth where she tells us about hopes for future collabs, computer crashes and her thoughts on the Triple J debate.

How’s the tour been going so far?

Yeah it's been going well! Melbourne and Adelaide sold out which was super exciting...a lot of fun!

Have you had any particularly memorable shows?

Melbourne was memorable for sure! My computer kind of crashed at the end of the first song haha, but we just stopped the visuals and the show went on...it was fine in the end! The crowd was really into it and it helped me push past the tech difficulties at the start.

Favourite songs to perform live?

I love to perform 'Only Me' off my new EP the most

What’s it like touring with SAFIA and Fishing?

Fun! We are like one big family now - it's been great getting to hang out with them.

Your excellent self-titled EP was released earlier this year, how did it feel to get that out there?

Felt G R E A T! I had it finished last year in August and it was due to come out then but we decided to push it back to space out the singles and build up the release...and I'm happy we did.

Electronic music fans have really been raving about you. What does it feel like to have quite a loyal fan base?

It's very comforting and at the same time really motivating - I just want to keep creating more music and get it out there. It's so awesome to have such strong support from listeners.

When it comes to producing your songs, what generally pops into your head first? Lyrics or the music?

It changes every time to be honest, lately it's chord progressions....and then I'll put down a vocal melody.

Where do draw inspiration from? Are there any particular artists that you would cite as influences?

My inspiration comes from the people around me, my dreams, and artists that I listen to - some of my influences is The Knife, Joni Mitchell and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Has there been any collaborations you’ve done that you previously would have never thought possible?

Flight Facilities! I am such big fans of their music that it was so exciting when they asked me to feature on their single last year for ‘I Didn't Believe.”

Is there a particular artist you’d love to collaborate with?

At the top of my list is Disclosure!

In regards to Triple J, there’s been a huge debate circling around whether new Aussie acts are catering their sound to get played on Triple J. What are your thoughts on this issue?

I don't really think about it to be honest - I can understand where people are coming from about a 'triple j sound' but you know, if the music isn't good it won't get love, simple as that.

What’s next for Elizabeth Rose after this tour has wrapped up? Can we expect an album?

Going overseas! And yes, working on an album too. Can't wait!
